A welcoming dinner table, without overdoing it

Room for the plates, light that brings people together and a few lovely textures: five simple ways to set the mood.

A welcoming dinner table, without overdoing it

To light a dinner table, place a lamp where it is stable, with room for serving dishes and a clear view of your guests. Two lamps can spread light along a long table. LED candles add small pools of light without an open flame.

Begin with what needs to fit

Set out plates, glasses and cutlery before adding decoration. Allow room for sharing dishes and for people to move their arms comfortably. This first step shows you where a lamp can sit without getting in the way of dinner. A welcoming table leaves space for the people using it.

On a small table, one light may be enough. Larger serving dishes can wait on a nearby sideboard until they are needed.

Keep the conversation in view

Position the lamp so you can see the person opposite without looking around an object. Check the shade’s height while sitting in a dining chair, not just while standing beside the table. A slightly off-centre position can work better than a perfectly symmetrical centrepiece.

On a longer table, two Lune lamps can create a gentle rhythm. Space them around the place settings and serving areas, rather than following an arbitrary measurement.

Choose a few materials that belong together

Linen, ceramics and glass already offer plenty of texture. Keep the colour palette restrained so the food and the company remain the focus. A softly crumpled cloth and simply folded napkins can feel as considered as a formal setting.

Repeat one detail from the lamp in another object, then leave it there. A few stems in a low vase may be all the greenery the table needs.

Check the atmosphere from your seat

Once the lights are on, sit down and look at faces, plates and reflections in the glasses. Keep enough light to eat comfortably. If your model offers adjustment, try it with the table set as it will be used.

Braise LED candles can add another point of light without a flame. Still keep all lights stable, away from liquids and clear of the route taken by hot dishes. Fabric should not cover any lamp.

Prepare, then let the evening happen

Have a final look before guests arrive and make sure the lamps are ready to use. Then allow the glasses to move and the dishes to take over the centre. The most inviting table is one where people feel comfortable staying, not one that has to remain untouched.
